About David

David Buchta serves as Associate Teaching Professor of Classics and Senior Lecturer in Sanskrit at Brown University in the Department of Classics. His primary area of specialization is Sanskrit poetry and theology of bhakti, particularly in the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition associated with Caitanya (1486–1533). This focus underscores the interdisciplinarity of the Sanskritic intellectual world, with secondary expertise in Sanskrit poetics (alaṅkāraśāstra), linguistics and grammar (vyākaraṇa), philosophical literature (darśana), technical literature (śāstra), and the reception of Sanskrit works in Bengali and Hindi sources. Through his research on bhakti theology, Buchta contributes to scholarly understanding of devotional traditions in South Asian religious studies and Theology. He earned a PhD in South Asia Studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 2014, with a dissertation entitled “Pedagogical Poetry: Didactics and Devotion in Rūpa Gosvāmin’s Stavamālā.” Additional degrees include an MA (Fil. Mag.) in South Asia Studies (Indology) from Uppsala University in 2006 and a BA in Religion from Emory University in 1997. Buchta joined Brown in 2012 as a Lecturer, following part-time lecturing positions in Sanskrit at Rutgers University (2008–2012) and the University of Pennsylvania (2007–2008).

Buchta has received the Karen T. Romer Award for Excellence in Advising in 2024, honoring his exceptional undergraduate mentoring, and the President’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Governance in 2025, recognizing service on committees including the Committee on Academic Standing, the Search Committee for the Deputy Dean of the College for Advising, the Honorary Degrees Committee, and the Brown University Community Council. Prior fellowships encompass the Briton Martin Dissertation Completion Fellowship (2011–12), Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (2008–09), and Ben Franklin Doctoral Fellowship (2006–11). His key publications include “Tradition Beyond Sub-commentaries: Influence and Innovation in Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa’s Commentary on Bhāgavata Purāṇa 1.1.1” (Journal of Vaishnava Studies, 2025), “Unknown Like Ḹ” (Journal of the American Oriental Society, 2024), “Fear and Devotion in Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava Rasa Theory” (Journal of Dharma Studies, 2022), “Evoking Rasa Through Stotra: Rūpa Gosvāmin’s Līlāmṛta, A List of Kṛṣṇa’s Names” (International Journal of Hindu Studies, 2017), and the chapter “Dependent Agency and Hierarchical Determinism in the Theology of Madhva” (Oxford University Press, 2014). Buchta teaches courses such as Elementary Sanskrit, the Bhagavad Gītā, Classical Indian Philosophy, and Sanskrit Belles Lettres, enriching student engagement with classical Indian literature and thought.
