Dr. David Daly is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Anaesthesia Teaching & Research unit at Monash University’s Department of Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. He obtained his MBBS from the University of Melbourne and his specialist qualification as a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) in 1998. Daly completed a fellowship year in cardiothoracic anaesthesia at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, UK, and subsequently held a full-time position as a cardiothoracic anaesthetist at The Alfred Hospital, where he serves as Senior Staff Specialist Anaesthetist. He also holds a Master of Clinical Epidemiology (MClinEpi) from Monash University, a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Trials, and certification from the National Board of Echocardiography perioperative PTeXAM. He has maintained continuous professional development through ANZCA since its inception.
Daly’s research interests include adult cardiothoracic anaesthesia encompassing heart and lung transplantation, organ donor optimisation, donation after cardiac death, mechanical cardiac assistance, pulmonary thromboendarterectomy, transoesophageal echocardiography, anaesthesia for major trauma, human factors, and system failures related to medical error. Notable publications comprise “Tranexamic acid alters the immunophenotype of phagocytes after lower limb surgery” (Thrombosis Journal, 2022), “Perioperative antimicrobial decision making: Focused ethnography study in orthopedic and cardiothoracic surgeries in an Australian hospital” (Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, 2020), “Association between peri-operative angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin-2 receptor blockers and acute kidney injury in major elective non-cardiac surgery: a multicentre, prospective cohort study” (Anaesthesia, 2018), “Intravenous tranexamic acid and lower limb arthroplasty—a randomised controlled feasibility study” (Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, 2018), and the chapter “Anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents” in Perioperative Medicine for the Junior Clinician (Wiley-Blackwell, 2015). He serves as Australian representative on the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists International Committee, former Chairman of the ANZCA Cardiothoracic Vascular and Perfusion Special Interest Group, editorial board member of an international anaesthesia journal, and reviewer for multiple journals. At The Alfred Hospital, he represents Surgical Services on the Infection Prevention Committee and is a member of the Senior Medical Staff Association Executive.
