Dr David Ellis is a Senior Lecturer, Acting Chair of Discipline (Secondary Education), and Undergraduate Course Coordinator for Secondary Education and Technology Education in the Faculty of Education at Southern Cross University. His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Education (BEd) from the University of Sydney, a Master of Urban Design Studies (MUDS) from Bond University, and a PhD from Southern Cross University. The focus of his doctoral research was teacher professional learning and expertise in a changing world, highlighting teacher education as foundational to developing capabilities for lifelong learning among educators. With more than 20 years of teaching experience in secondary schools and over 16 years in university teaching and leadership roles, Dr Ellis has established himself as an international researcher and leader in education. He has participated in projects across Asia and the Pacific, teaches various units within the Faculty of Education, and contributes to initiatives like the Future Teachers Club.
Dr Ellis's research specializations include teacher professional learning, contextualised approaches to education in Design and Technology, and interdisciplinary fields such as STEM, STEAM, and Maker education. His scholarship aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, as documented in Scopus. Key publications feature co-authored chapters in Teaching STEM in the Secondary School: Helping Teachers Meet the Challenge (Routledge, 2020), Handbook of Research on STEM Education (Routledge, 2020), and "STEM Policy in Australia" (2020); the article "Development of a Teacher of Mathematics Identity (ToMI) Scale" (Mathematics Education Research Journal, 2023); and "Site/Sight/Insight: Becoming a Socioecological Learner through Collaborative Artmaking Practices" (2019). Additional significant works encompass "Identifying quality with pre-service technology educators: a different perspective on assessment" (2012), "Procedural skills, SketchUp and vodcasting: distance teaching of design drawing skills" (Creative Education, 2014), "Adaptive expertise: in understanding and teaching 'eco-literacy'" (2015), "An Online Support System for Teachers of Mathematics in Regional, Rural and Remote Australia" (Australian and International Journal of Rural Education, 2020), and contributions to virtual worlds in higher education and school reform in rural Australia.
