About David

David G. Embrick is Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies at the University of Connecticut, holding joint appointments in the Department of Sociology and the Africana Studies Institute. At the UConn Hartford campus, he serves as Director of Research and Community Engagement, Director of the Sustainable Global Cities Initiative, and leads Research on Resilient Cities, Racism, and Equity. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from Texas A&M University in 2006, M.A. in 2002, and B.A. in 1999, all from the same institution, along with a Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies in 2006. Prior to UConn, where he joined as Associate Professor in 2016, Embrick was Associate Professor of Sociology at Loyola University Chicago from 2012 to 2016 and Assistant Professor from 2006 to 2012. His career includes visiting scholar positions at the American Bar Foundation, Northeastern University, University of Illinois at Chicago, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Embrick's scholarship centers on the impact of contemporary racism on communities of color, diversity ideology and workplace inequalities, racial microaggressions, racism in space and place, and comparative racial and ethnic oppressions. He has co-edited or co-authored books including Protecting Whiteness: Whitelash and the Rejection of Racial Equality (University of Washington Press, 2020), Challenging the Status Quo: Diversity, Democracy, and Equality in the 21st Century (Brill Press, 2019), State Lotteries: Historical Continuity, Rearticulations of Racism, and American Taxation (Routledge, 2017), and International Handbook of the Demography of Race and Ethnicity (Springer, 2015). Notable peer-reviewed articles include "Tearing Down to Take Up Space: Dismantling White Spaces in the United States" (American Behavioral Scientist, 2021), "White Space(s) and the Reproduction of White Supremacy" (American Behavioral Scientist, 2020), and "Racial Microaggressions: Bridging Psychology and Sociology" (Sociology Compass, 2020). Embrick has earned awards such as the Southwestern Sociological Association Distinguished Published Paper Awards for 2019 and 2014, the Society for the Study of Social Problems Kimberle Crenshaw Outstanding Article Award (2015), and the American Sociological Association Minority Fellowship. He is Past-President of the Southwestern Sociological Association and Association for Humanist Sociology, and former Vice President of the Society for the Study of Social Problems. As Founding Co-Editor of Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, Founding Book Series Editor of Sociology of Diversity (Bristol University Press), and Founding Co-Series Editor of Sociology of Race and Ethnicity (Georgia University Press), Embrick has profoundly influenced the field. He has given over 125 invited talks and workshops on diversity ideology, workplace racism, racial microaggressions, and academic professionalism across academic and public venues.
