David Howard is an accomplished physician-scientist and educator in the field of Medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno. Holding a Ph.D. earned in 1998 and an M.D. from the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine in 2004, Dr. Howard brings a strong foundation in both scientific research and clinical medicine to his roles. His postgraduate training includes a residency in Internal Medicine at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital (2004-2007) and a specialized fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the University of Colorado (2008-2011). Board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, as well as by the American Board of Obesity Medicine in Obesity Medicine, Dr. Howard maintains high standards in his clinical and academic pursuits. These credentials underscore his expertise in managing complex metabolic disorders.
As Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, Dr. Howard has advanced through faculty ranks, previously serving as Assistant Professor in Internal Medicine-Reno and Chief of the Endocrine Department from 2018 to 2021. In his current leadership position, he directs curricular affairs for the M.D. program, ensuring the delivery of high-quality medical education and contributing to scholarly concentrations in medical education. Dr. Howard's academic interests focus on diabetes, obesity, thyroid disorders, and bone metabolism. His scholarly output includes the co-authored paper titled "The importance of palmitoleic acid to adipocyte insulin resistance and whole-body insulin sensitivity in type 1 diabetes," published in 2013 in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. He also received recognition through the CMS Meaningful Use Stage 1 Certification from GE Healthcare in 2015-2016.
