About David

David C. Lyden, M.D., Ph.D., is the Stavros S. Niarchos Professor of Pediatrics and Cell and Developmental Biology at Weill Cornell Medicine, Cornell University. He also serves as Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Physician Scientist Training Program at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Lyden earned a B.S. from the University of Connecticut in 1981, a Ph.D. from the University of Vermont in 1985, and an M.D. from Brown University School of Medicine in 1989. His research focuses on the mechanisms of cancer metastasis, including the roles of extracellular vesicles in establishing the pre-metastatic niche, tumor microenvironment interactions, and vascular development in tumors, with particular emphasis on pediatric brain tumors such as medulloblastoma and high-grade gliomas.

Dr. Lyden has held his current endowed professorship since 2013. He is the lead editor of the textbook Cancer Metastasis: Biologic Basis and Therapeutics. His work has appeared in journals including Nature, Cell, and Science. Dr. Lyden serves on the Tumor Microenvironment Steering Committee and the Metastasis Steering Committee of the American Association for Cancer Research. In 2024, he received the Paget-Ewing Award from the Metastasis Research Society. He has also been recognized with an NCI Outstanding Investigator Award and multiple teaching awards for his work with fellows, residents, medical students, graduate students, and MD/PhD students in the Tri-Institutional MD/PhD Program.
