Dr David Mount is a Lecturer in Criminology in the School of Social Science at the University of Queensland. A former Australian Army Intelligence Officer with 23 years of service, he served at strategic, operational, and tactical levels, culminating in his appointment as Commandant of Australia's Defence Intelligence Training Centre in 2003, where he managed 145 staff and a $2.5 million annual budget. For his performance, he received a Commander Training Command Commendation. Following his separation from the Army in 2006, Mount operated as a self-employed consultant, delivering intelligence training to the Australian Federal Police, Victoria's Office of Police Integrity, and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, and providing services to major Defence projects.
Mount holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of New South Wales, a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration, a Master of Justice (Strategic Intelligence) from Queensland University of Technology, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland on investigative interviewing skill acquisition, transfer, and application in the Queensland Police Service. At UQ, he designed and taught an undergraduate course in Global Security and Regulation, developed the criminology component for the Master of Cyber Security program, and currently lectures in Cyber Criminology. His research specializations encompass investigative interviewing, police training, intelligence-led policing, national security criminology, countering child exploitation material, and offensive cyber techniques in law enforcement. Notable publications include "Privacy and hacking powers: is there an implied right to privacy in the use of computer surveillance powers in Australia?" (Salus Journal, 2024), "Investigative interviewing skills in policing: Examining the transfer of training into workplace practices" (Policing: An International Journal, 2021), "Triaging online child abuse material: testing a decision support tool to enhance law enforcement and investigative prioritisation" (Policing, 2021), and his 2018 PhD thesis.
