About David

David Richardson is a Distinguished Professor of Ecology in the Department of Botany and Zoology at Stellenbosch University. He earned a BSc degree in Forestry from Stellenbosch University in 1981 and a PhD in Botany from the University of Cape Town in 1989. Prior to joining Stellenbosch University, he worked as Associate Professor of Botany and deputy director of the Institute for Plant Conservation at the University of Cape Town from 1992 to 2004. He joined the Department of Botany and Zoology at Stellenbosch University as Professor of Ecology in 2004, served as Deputy-Director (Science Strategy) at the Centre for Invasion Biology from 2004 to 2012, and was appointed Director of the Centre for Invasion Biology in 2012, a role he held until 2022. He was promoted to Distinguished Professor in 2014. His research focuses on invasion ecology, with particular emphasis on biological invasions involving plants, trees, and shrubs. Richardson has authored or co-authored hundreds of scientific papers and several books, including Invasion Dynamics and edited volumes such as Fifty Years of Invasion Ecology: The Legacy of Charles Elton. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Diversity and Distributions from 1998 to 2015. Among his honors are multiple A-ratings from South Africa’s National Research Foundation, the Hans Sigrist Prize, election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa, the John F.W. Herschel Medal, membership in the Academy of Science of South Africa, the National Science and Technology Forum Award, and the African Union Kwame Nkrumah Award for Scientific Excellence in the Life and Earth Sciences. He has contributed to editorial roles, committee work, and public recognition for advancing understanding of invasive species management and ecology.
