Professor Dawn Freshwater served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Auckland from March 2020 to April 2026, becoming the first woman appointed to the role. A British academic and mental health researcher, she holds a BA and PhD from the University of Nottingham, with her doctoral thesis examining transformatory learning in nurse education. Her academic career includes positions as Professor of Mental Health at the University of Leeds, where she joined in 2006 and later served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Western Australia from 2017 to 2020. Freshwater's research focuses on mental health, forensic mental health, psychological therapies, offender health, public health, and nurse education. She has authored or co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers and several books, including Critical Reflection for Nursing and the Helping Professions (2001), Therapeutic Nursing (2002), and The Presenting Past (5th edition, 2023). In 2001, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing (FRCN) and is recognised among the top 2% of cited scientists worldwide in fields including public health and clinical psychology. During her tenure at the University of Auckland, the institution saw improvements in QS world rankings, reaching 65th globally in 2024, and advancements in sustainability rankings.
