About Debbie

Debbie Moreno-Chamorro is an Associate Professor Independent Prescribing in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences. As the Independent Prescribing Lead, she oversees the delivery of one of the largest non-medical prescribing education programs, comprising diverse professional groups including nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and radiographers. A registered nurse with over 20 years of clinical experience in emergency care, she has made significant contributions to prescribing education through innovative teaching practices and curriculum development. Her leadership emphasizes patient and public involvement, co-production with service users, and online learning opportunities to enhance accessibility and professional development.

Moreno-Chamorro's scholarly work focuses on key areas such as the experiences of designated prescribing supervisors, patient involvement in curriculum design, and inclusive clinical consultations for people with learning disabilities. Notable publications include the journal article 'Making clinical consultations inclusive for people with learning disabilities' (2024), 'The role of the designated prescribing supervisor: An evaluation' (2023, co-authored with Sally Jarmain), and the conference presentation 'Are you talking about me? Patients’ involvement in curriculum design and development' (2022). Earlier contributions feature conference papers on international comparisons of nurse practitioners between the US and UK (2005-2007), enhancing student experiences in emergency departments (2005), and nurses' perceptions of e-learning (2005). Under her guidance, the UWE Bristol Prescribing Team, including academics, clinicians, and NHS managers, won the Advance HE Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence in 2022 for their outstanding collaborative approach to prescribing education. She has collaborated with organizations like Brandon Trust to develop tailored prescribing courses and contributes to the Joint Council for Clinical Prescribing (JCCP). Additionally, she leads modules such as Independent and/or Supplementary Prescribing and supports NHS England practice-based assessment strategies.
