Deborah Welsh serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Psychology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She directs the Transitions Across the Lifespan Lab (TALL), which investigates various transition periods across the life trajectory, with a particular emphasis on romantic relationships. Her research program focuses on understanding the development of romantic relationships and their impact on adolescent and young adult functioning. Key areas of interest include life transitions, romantic relationships, gender, family relationships, couples dynamics, and the transition to college. Dr. Welsh is also affiliated with the UT Psychological Clinic, contributing to clinical training and services.
With more than 30 years as a faculty member at UTK, Deborah Welsh has established an exceptional record of research scholarship, teaching excellence, and student mentoring. She has previously served as Director of the Clinical Psychology Program. Her contributions have been recognized through prestigious honors, including selection as a Chancellor's Professor in 2022 for extraordinary scholarly attainment and service, and the Distinguished Research Career at UT Award presented at the Faculty Awards Convocation. She has obtained grants from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to support her observational studies of adolescent romantic interactions.
