Dr. Dianne Goeman is an Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Medicine at Alfred Hospital, Monash University. She holds a Conjoint Senior Lecturer position in the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle. Possessing qualifications of PhD, MA, PGDipSoc, and BA, Dr. Goeman specializes in research within public health, primary care, and geriatrics. Her career commenced in 1999 with an appointment to manage a Co-operative Research Centre for Asthma and Airways project on consumer priorities for asthma care, which identified gaps in care delivery for people with asthma. This foundational work propelled her contributions to developing models of care supporting health professionals in delivering services to older people with asthma, as well as support for people with dementia and their care partners. She has taught self-management strategies to individuals with asthma and pursued investigations into models of care for those living with dementia and in aged care settings.
Central to Dr. Goeman's approach is the inclusion of consumer voices in research to enhance health outcomes and ensure safe, high-quality healthcare. Her research expertise encompasses dementia, mental health, homelessness, and aged care, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals including good health and well-being, and sustainable cities and communities. Key collaborations feature the NHMRC Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre at the University of Sydney, NHMRC Accord Dementia research team at the University of Newcastle, Co-operative Research Centre for Asthma and Airways involving Alfred Hospital, Monash University, and the University of Sydney, Alzheimer’s Australia Victoria, and Asthma Australia. Prominent publications include 'Health and social care needs of people living with dementia: a qualitative study of dementia support in the Victorian region of Gippsland, Australia' (2024, Rural and Remote Health); 'Beyond crisis: Enacted sense-making among ethnic minority carers of people with dementia in Australia' (2021, Dementia); 'Clinical practice guidelines and principles of care for people with dementia: A protocol for undertaking a Delphi technique' (2021, BMJ Open); 'The provision of dementia care in general practice: practice nurse perceptions of their role' (2021, BMC Family Practice); and 'Development of a discussion tool to enable well-being by providing choices for people with dementia: a qualitative study' (2017).
