Dietrich Jehle, MD, FACEP, RDMS, serves as Professor and Chair of the Sealy Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, and as Founding Program Director of its Emergency Medicine Residency Program, positions he has held since joining the institution in the summer of 2021. He earned his MD from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1979 and completed residency training at the University of Pittsburgh in 1982. He also holds an MS in Biostatistics from the University of Pittsburgh, awarded in 1998. Prior to his appointment at UTMB, Dr. Jehle contributed to the development of emergency medicine residency programs at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, the University at Buffalo (launched in 1994), and Grand Strand Medical Center in South Carolina (founding director in 2016). At the State University of New York at Buffalo, he served as Vice Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Clinical Director at Erie County Medical Center for 17 years, Tenured Professor of Emergency Medicine, and Associate Medical Director beginning in 2008. He was appointed to the Erie County Medical Center Board of Directors in 2009.
Dr. Jehle is recognized for his pioneering work in emergency ultrasound, including the first U.S. studies on its use by emergency physicians for blunt abdominal trauma and evaluations of gallbladder, aortic, renal, and first-trimester pregnancy conditions. He co-authored foundational textbooks such as Ultrasound in Emergency Medicine (1995), Ultrasonography in Trauma: The FAST Exam (2003), and Emergency Ultrasound of the Eye and Orbit (2011). His research has also addressed resuscitation, airway management, and motor vehicle crash injuries. He has received the American College of Emergency Physicians National Teaching Award (2000) and Emergency Ultrasound Award (2001), among other honors including the ECMC Distinguished Physician’s Award (2008). Dr. Jehle has held national roles such as Board Examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine and trauma site surveyor for New York and Illinois.
