Professor Dileep Sharma serves as Head of Discipline, Oral Health in the School of Health Sciences within the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing at the University of Newcastle. Possessing qualifications including BDS, MDS, PhD from Griffith University, Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice from James Cook University, FPFA, and FICD, he brings extensive experience from previous roles as Senior Lecturer (2016-2022) and Associate Professor in Periodontics (2022) at James Cook University. With over sixteen years as a health professional and clinical educator across Asia, Africa, and Australia, Sharma has excelled in undergraduate research coordination, mentoring students to achieve conference prizes and peer-reviewed publications. His research focuses on periodontics, oral implantology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, encompassing dental implants, oral cancer prevention, tissue regeneration, MRONJ, and public oral health management. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and presentations, with notable publications such as "Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of jaw (BRONJ): diagnostic criteria and possible pathogenic mechanisms" (Vascular Cell, 2013), "Does potassium iodide application following silver diamine fluoride reduce staining of tooth? A systematic review" (Australian Dental Journal, 2020), "Oral cancer in Australia: Rising incidence and worsening mortality" (Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine, 2023), and "Prevalence of Periodontal Disease in South Pacific Island Countries: A Systematic Review" (Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health, 2025). Sharma has attracted over $900,000 in grants, including major equipment grants totaling $490,000 in 2023-2024, and fosters international collaborations.
Sharma's contributions are recognized by awards including the Clarks Family Award for Sustainable Dental Materials Research (Australian Dental Research Foundation), 2022 ANZ Joan Chong Award in Dental Materials (IADR), and fellowships from Pierre Fauchard Academy and International College of Dentists (2023). He contributes as a peer reviewer for Q1 journals, guest editor on dental implants and COVID-19, funding reviewer for NHMRC and others, former Councillor for IADR ANZ division (2018-2022), and delivers public lectures on periodontal advances, oral health in mental health, and career opportunities in dentistry.
