Dr. Dinesha Kumarawansa serves as a Senior Professional Practice Fellow at the Centre for Rural Health, within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Division at the University of Otago. She is associated with the Department of General Practice and Rural Health, Dunedin School of Medicine. Her academic qualifications include MB ChB, PGDipPaed, PGDipRPHP, and FDRHMNZ, reflecting her expertise in medicine, paediatrics, rural postgraduate hospital practice, and rural hospital medicine. Practicing as a Rural Doctor and General Practitioner at Te Kuiti Medical Centre in Te Kuiti, New Zealand, she delivers hospital-level care in a rural setting. Her interest in rural medicine was sparked during a sixth-year medical student placement in Te Kuiti while studying at the University of Otago.
In her educational role, Dr. Kumarawansa acts as Paper Co-convener for GENA 729 Surgical Specialties in Rural Settings and contributes to teaching in GENA 724 The Context of Rural Healthcare. These papers are part of the University of Otago's Rural Postgraduate Programme, which provides distance learning qualifications including the Postgraduate Certificate in Rural Clinical Practice (PGCertRCP), Postgraduate Diploma in Rural Clinical Practice (PGDipRCP), Postgraduate Certificate in Clinician Performed Ultrasound (PGCertCPU), and Master of Health Sciences (MHealSc) endorsed by RNZCGP for CPD. In 2023, she achieved Fellowship of the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine New Zealand as part of the largest cohort of 10 new fellows since the programme's inception in 2008, recognizing her completion of advanced training in rural hospital medicine. Previously a third-year registrar in rural hospital medicine and general practice at Te Kuiti Medical Centre in 2022, she now holds membership on the governance committee of the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine under the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. Through her combined clinical and teaching commitments, Dr. Kumarawansa supports the development of rural health professionals addressing key challenges in rural healthcare delivery across New Zealand.
