Dirk S. Hovorka is Professor and Deputy Head of Discipline, Research, in the Discipline of Business Information Systems at the University of Sydney Business School. He earned a BA (Honours), MS in Geology, MS in Telecommunications, and PhD in Information Systems from the University of Colorado. His career at the University of Sydney Business School has seen him progress to full professorship, where he excels in both teaching and research within information systems.
Hovorka's research interests include futures studies, philosophy of science, design, sustainability, semantic analysis, and speculation in science. He has published extensively in leading journals such as the European Journal of Information Systems, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, and Information Systems Journal. Key publications comprise 'Quantitative approaches to content analysis: Identifying conceptual drift across publication outlets' (with M. Indulska and J. Recker, EJIS, 2012, 234 citations), 'A theory of tailorable technology design' (with M. Germonprez and F. Collopy, JAIS, 2007, 207 citations), 'Secondary design: A case of behavioral design science research' (with M. Germonprez and U. Gal, JAIS, 2011, 125 citations), 'Enabling agile adoption practices through network organizations' (with K.R. Larsen, EJIS, 2006, 124 citations), 'Speculative foresight: A foray beyond digital transformation' (ISJ, 2025), and 'From Other Worlds: Speculative Engagement Through Digital Geographies' (with S. Peter, JAIS, 2021). His scholarship has accumulated over 2,300 citations on Google Scholar. Hovorka has been honored with the 2018 Professor of the Year award from the University of Sydney Business School, Wayne Lonergan Award for Teaching Excellence, and Dean's Award for Teaching (2022). He contributes to the field through keynote addresses at ACIS 2025, participation in the ICIS 2024 Senior Scholar Forum, and co-winning the Best Conceptual Paper Award at ACIS 2024.
