Professor Dirk Pesch is the Head of the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at University College Cork, holding the position of Professor of Computer Science (Internet of Things) since joining the institution in 2019. He earned his Dipl.-Ing. (MEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from RWTH Aachen University, Germany, and his PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland. Earlier in his career, Pesch worked as a design engineer at Nokia in Germany and the UK, developing and implementing communication protocols for cordless telecommunication products. At Cork Institute of Technology (now Munster Technological University), he progressed from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, established and directed the Nimbus Research Centre as founding director in 2009, and was designated Professor in December 2016.
Pesch is an internationally leading researcher specializing in Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), wireless communications and networking, with applications in smart and connected communities, vehicular networks, smart manufacturing, health and well-being, and sustainable ICT. He directs the Research Ireland-funded Centre for Research Training in Advanced Networks for Sustainable Societies (ADVANCE CRT), serves as co-Principal Investigator for the SFI CONNECT Centre for Future Networks and the CONFIRM Centre for Smart Manufacturing, and leads the Cork Smart Gateway initiative. Since 2000, he has contributed to Irish and European research grants totaling over €85 million, with approximately €16 million directly supporting his research. Pesch has co-authored over 250 scientific journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters, including notable publications such as "6G for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Communications: Enabling Technologies, Challenges, and Opportunities" (2022), "TS-LoRa: Time-slotted LoRaWAN for the Industrial Internet of Things" (2020), and "FREE - Fine-Grained Scheduling for Reliable and Energy-Efficient Data Collection in LoRaWAN" (2020). He co-edited the first book on IoT technologies enabling energy-positive urban neighbourhoods, published by Academic Press. Pesch serves on the editorial boards of Springer Nature Wireless Networks and MDPI Sensors, acts as a reviewer for funding agencies including DFG and Academy of Finland, and contributes to flagship conferences like IEEE ICC, Globecom, and IEEE World Forum on IoT as TPC member, with roles as Technical Programme Co-Chair for IEEE SmartComp 2024 and General Co-Chair for IEEE SmartComp 2025.
