Doina Bein is the Chair and Professor in the Computer Science Department at California State University, Fullerton. She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2006, along with an M.S. from the same institution. She previously received her B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science from Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iasi, Romania. Her professional career encompasses diverse roles, including Visiting Scholar at Osaka University in Japan in Fall 2006, Research Associate at the University of Texas at Dallas starting in 2007, Research Faculty at the Applied Research Laboratory of Pennsylvania State University in 2008, and Part-time Instructor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas from Fall 2013 to May 2015. Bein joined California State University, Fullerton as Assistant Professor in August 2015, advancing to Associate Professor in August 2019 and to Professor in August 2022.
Dr. Bein's research focuses on distributed computing, energy-efficient wireless networks, fault-tolerant algorithms, graph embedding, randomized algorithms, sensor fusion, ad hoc and wireless networks, data sensor fusion, automatic and dynamic decision-making, and graph algorithms. She has authored over 100 publications, including five book chapters, 20 journal papers, and more than 50 conference papers. Among her highly cited works are "Novel deep learning model with CNN and bi-directional LSTM for improved stock market index prediction" (2019, cited 255 times) and "Securing unmanned autonomous systems from cyber threats" (2019, cited 73 times). She received the best paper award in the software technology track at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) 2008 for her single-author paper introducing the k-fold cover set concept for networks. As principal investigator or co-principal investigator, she has obtained significant funding, including an Air Force Office of Scientific Research grant "Dynamic Data Driven Machine Perception and Learning for Border Control" ($1,068,215; 2012-2017), a DURIP AFOSR grant ($85,326; 2016-2018), and an NSF grant "Building Capacity: Advancing Student Success in Undergraduate Engineering and Computer Science" ($1,496,967; 2018-2023). Dr. Bein serves as associate editor for two journals and Academic Editor for the Journal of Advances in Mathematics and Computer Science. She has contributed to numerous conferences as publicity chair, technical program committee member, and general co-chair for the 21st International Conference on Information Technology: New Generations (ITNG 2024). Additionally, she mentors undergraduate and graduate students, with one student, Shawn Ricardo, winning first place at the 30th annual CSU Student Research Competition in 2016.
