Dr. Doug Iupati is a Senior Professional Practice Fellow in the Department of Surgery and Critical Care and a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Radiation Therapy at the University of Otago, Wellington, within the Faculty of Medicine, Health Sciences Division. He earned his MBChB from the University of Auckland in 1996 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR) in 2009. As a specialist radiation oncologist, Iupati practices at Wellington Hospital and Bowen Icon Cancer Centre, focusing on advanced treatments for various cancers, with a particular interest in prostate cancer and brachytherapy.
Iupati has advanced radiation therapy practices in New Zealand, notably leading the introduction of Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) at Wellington Hospital, the first such implementation for prostate cancer patients, improving treatment accuracy and speed. His research contributions center on prostate cancer radiotherapy outcomes, dosimetry, imaging guidance, and salvage strategies. Notable publications include 'Relapse patterns after low-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy' (2021), 'Validation of Varian’s SmartAdapt® deformable image registration algorithm for clinical application' (2015), 'MR-guided prostate biopsy for planning of focal salvage after radiation therapy' (2014), 'Patterns of failure after iodine-125 seed implantation for prostate cancer' (2014), and multiple studies on brachytherapy techniques (2011-2013). Additional works cover cervical cancer survival disparities between Māori and non-Māori women (2010) and community-based palliative care models (2023). Iupati has co-authored educational pieces on radiation therapy's role in prostate cancer management and engages in professional radiation oncology forums.
