About Emad
Emad Botros serves as Lecturer in Old Testament at the Near East School of Theology in Beirut, Lebanon, where he teaches courses including Introduction to the Old Testament, Old Testament Interpretation, Reading Jonah in a Middle Eastern and Islamic Context, and Advanced Old Testament Studies. He holds a Doctor of Christian Theology from McMaster Divinity College, awarded in May 2021 for his dissertation titled “The Merciful and Gracious God: Biblical Theology of Jonah in the Context of Islam,” with supervisors Mark J. Boda and Martin Accad. He also earned a Master of Arts in Christian Theology from the same institution in May 2013 for his thesis “The Merciful and Compassionate God: Biblical Theology in an Islamic Context,” and a Bachelor of Theology from the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary in June 2003. Prior to his current role, he was core faculty at the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary from 2014 to March 2025 and holds an adjunct position at Carey Seminary for Theological and Pastoral Formation.
Dr. Botros’s research focuses on the Old Testament, biblical theology, and the intersection of biblical texts with the Qur’an, with particular emphasis on the character of God, the Book of Jonah, the Pentateuch especially Exodus, and intertextuality between the Bible and Islamic sources. His publications include the chapter “The Reception History of the Character of Jonah in the Qur’an: Toward a Better Understanding of the Qur’an and Practical Implications for the Church” in the 2020 volume The Religious Other, edited by Martin Accad and Jonathan Andrews, and the forthcoming book Jonah in the Windows on the Biblical Text series. He has presented conference papers at the Society of Biblical Literature in 2014 and 2021 on topics including Jonah and the Golden Calf narrative in an Islamic context. In addition, he received a Research Fellowship at McMaster Divinity College for 2023–2024 and has conducted seminars on reading the Bible in the context of Islam at various institutions.
