Professor Eduardo Bernabe is Professor of Dental Public Health at Queen Mary University of London in the Institute of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and serves as Honorary Academic Consultant in the Office for Health Improvement & Disparities. He earned his BDS with honours from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in 1998, followed by two years as a general dental practitioner for the Ministry of Health in Peru. He then joined his alma mater as Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Dentistry in 2001, advancing to Associate Professor in 2006, during which time he completed an MSc in Stomatology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Research Statistics. Bernabe obtained his PhD in Epidemiology from University College London and conducted postdoctoral training at the Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. In 2011, he joined King’s College London as Senior Lecturer, promoted to Reader in 2017, before returning to Queen Mary University of London in 2023 as Professor of Dental Public Health.
Bernabe's research specializations encompass dental public health, oral epidemiology, and global oral health, with a focus on social determinants of oral health inequalities, lifecourse epidemiology of oral health and behaviours, and measuring the burden of oral diseases using patient-reported outcome measures, disability-adjusted life years, and societal costs. He has consulted for international organizations including the World Health Organization, American Dental Association Health Policy Institute, and Swedish Health Technology Assessment Board. He has held editorial roles such as associate editor for BMC Public Health and Health and Quality of Life Outcomes, and editorial board member for Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology and Revista Estomatológica Herediana. Key publications include "Global, Regional, and National Levels and Trends in Burden of Oral Conditions from 1990 to 2017: A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease 2017 Study" (Journal of Dental Research, 2020), "Role of Dentistry in Global Health: Challenges and Research Priorities" (Journal of Dental Research, 2021), "The impact of out-of-pocket payments for dental care on household finances in low and middle income countries" (BMC Public Health, 2017), and "Can minimal intervention dentistry help in tackling the global burden of untreated dental caries?" (British Dental Journal, 2020). He has received prestigious awards from academic institutions and international organizations for his contributions to the field.
