About Eduardo

Eduardo Nebot is a Professor in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney, holding the Patrick Chair in Automation and Logistics and serving as Director of the Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR). Born in Argentina, he obtained his BE degree from Universidad Nacional del Sur in 1980, followed by MSc and PhD degrees from Colorado State University in 1989. Nebot has held an academic position at the University of Sydney since 1992, where he has led pioneering research in field robotics. He is also a co-founder of Acumine, a spinoff company from the University of Sydney and CRCMining, focused on commercializing automation technologies for mining.

Nebot's research specializations encompass field robotics, with emphasis on navigation, sensing, automation, and safety. His work addresses intelligent transport systems, mining safety, and autonomous vehicles, including perception, mapping, decision-making, and control. He has authored or co-authored 219 publications, amassing over 11,300 citations and an h-index of 50. Key publications include 'Optimization of the simultaneous localization and map-building algorithm for real-time implementation' (2001, 1,150 citations), 'Consistency of the EKF-SLAM Algorithm' (2006, 757 citations), 'A high integrity IMU/GPS navigation loop for autonomous land vehicle applications' (2000, 639 citations), 'The aiding of a low-cost strapdown inertial measurement unit using vehicle model constraints for land vehicle applications' (2001, 596 citations), and 'Localization and map building using laser range sensors in outdoor applications' (2002, 394 citations). Nebot's innovations in navigation and automation technologies have been deployed in mines worldwide, enhancing safety and efficiency. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (FIEEE) and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (FTSE, 2016). His leadership extends to industrial projects such as autonomous straddle carriers, mine safe hauling systems, and autonomous train cargo loading.
