Ekaterina Volkova is an Associate Professor in the Department of Finance within the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne, where she also holds the position of Assistant Dean (Graduate Research). She joined the University of Melbourne in 2017 upon completing her PhD in Finance from Cornell University's SC Johnson College of Business. Earlier, she obtained an MA in Economics from the New Economic School in 2012 and an MS in Mathematics from Moscow State University in 2011. In her leadership role, she is responsible for the Faculty's graduate research programs, supported by the Academic Support Office Graduate Research Programs Team and the Graduate Research Directors' Advisory Group.
Volkova's research focuses on corporate governance, corporate disclosure, financial regulations, large shareholders, and politics in finance. She examines the oversight of publicly traded companies, including the influences of regulators such as the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice on corporate policies and dynamics, utilizing textual analysis and machine learning techniques. Her publications appear in top journals including the Journal of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies, and Management Science. Notable works include 'Information Revealed through the Regulatory Process: Interactions between the SEC and Companies ahead of Their IPO' (2020, with Michelle Lowry and Roni Michaely), 'Antitrust Enforcement Increases Economic Activity' (2025, with Tania Babina, Simcha Barkai, Jessica Jeffers, and Ezra Karger), 'Is Blockholder Diversity Detrimental?' (2025, with Miriam Schwartz-Ziv), 'Media Ownership and Ideological Slant: Evidence from Australian Newspaper Mergers' (2024, with Maxim Ananyev), and 'Regulatory Fragmentation' (2025, with Joseph Kalmenovitz and Michelle Lowry). She has earned the Brattle Group FIRN Best Paper Award for 'Antitrust Enforcement Increases Economic Activity,' the Brattle Group Prize (Distinguished Paper) for 'Regulatory Fragmentation,' and best paper awards at the FMARC and CAFM conferences for the latter.
