Dr. Eli Kotler holds the position of Adjunct Lecturer at Monash University in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, through the Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre. He earned his MBBS from Monash University in 2004 and a Masters of Psychiatry (MPM) from the University of Melbourne in 2011. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) since 2013, holds a Certificate in Old Age Psychiatry from RANZCP completed in 2014, and an Associate Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (AFRACMA) since 2015. Additionally, he completed a Certificate in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies in 2021. His career encompasses extensive clinical and administrative roles in psychiatry. Since 2018, he has served as Medical Director and Consultant Psychiatrist at Malvern Private Hospital, specializing in addictive and cognitive disorders. Previously, he was a Consultant Psychiatrist at Delmont Private Hospital from 2013 to 2020, Principal Psychiatry Registrar and Senior Registrar at The Alfred Hospital, Senior Psycho-geriatric Registrar at Caulfield Hospital, and Consultant Psycho-geriatrician at Emmy Monash Home for the Aged. He completed advanced training in psycho-geriatrics and general psychiatry at The Alfred Hospital in 2012 and 2011, respectively, following internship and basic training there from 2005 to 2010.
Kotler's research specializations include neuropsychiatric therapeutics, addiction, trauma, and neurodegenerative diseases. He has acted as Principal Investigator for clinical trials such as a Phase 2a open-label study of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for severe PTSD sponsored by Emyria, and Alfred Health trials including Study Evaluating Intepirdine (RVT-101) in Subjects With Mild to Moderate Alzheimer’s Disease on Donepezil (MINDSET, 2015–2016), Lu AE58054 in Patients With Mild to Moderate Alzheimer’s Disease (STARBRIGHT, 2013–2015), and studies on EVP-6124 and S 38093 for Alzheimer’s. He co-authored the 2016 review article 'Missed diagnosis: the emerging crisis of borderline personality disorder in older people' published through Monash University research output. As an educator, he oversees the clinical addiction rotation for Monash University medical students at Alfred Hospital, applying neuropsychoanalytic principles, and received the 2017 Alfred Health Award for Best Medical Student Educator in Psychiatry. He contributes as a Teaching Faculty member for Mind Medicine Australia’s Certificate in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies, serves on the board of Mind Medicine Australia since 2020, and is a regular speaker at national and international conferences on mental health, trauma, addiction, and psychedelics. He also sits on the advisory committee for the annual national addiction conference.
