Ellen M. Lavoie Smith, PhD, MSN, RN, AOCN®, FAAN, serves as Professor, Interim Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship, Marie O’Koren Endowed Chair in Nursing, and Co-Director of Faculty Scholarship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing. She joined the faculty in 2021 as Assistant Dean for Research and Scholarship. Her academic credentials include a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Michigan. Prior to her appointment at UAB, she held the position of associate professor of nursing with tenure at the University of Michigan School of Nursing.
Dr. Smith is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and holds certification as an Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse. In 2025, she received the Distinguished Researcher Award from the UAB School of Nursing and was appointed ONS Scholar-in-Residence by the Oncology Nursing Society. She previously delivered the 30th Dr. Jean A. Kelley Lecture at UAB. Her professional appointments include leadership roles in research and scholarship within the School of Nursing. Dr. Smith maintains an active research program focused on oncology nursing topics, including chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and related patient-reported outcomes. She has contributed to phase III clinical trials and systematic reviews in these areas.
