Great Professor!
Dr Emily Rokobauer holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Newcastle, awarded in 2024. Her dissertation, titled 'Japanese to English Literary Translation: A Qualitative Approach Using the Systems Model of Creativity,' supervised by Professor Phillip McIntyre and Dr Marie-Laure Vauille-Barcan from the School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences, marks a pioneering effort. This study is the first to apply Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's systems model of creativity—encompassing interactions between the individual translator, the domain of literary translation knowledge, and the field of social influences—to Japanese-to-English literary translation. The qualitative research explores the creative processes inherent in translating Japanese literature into English.
Prior to her PhD, Rokobauer completed a Bachelor of Communication and Bachelor of Communication (Honours) at the University of Newcastle. Affiliated with the university since 2019 in the School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences, she has served as a PhD candidate and sessional academic. In 2025, she was Course Coordinator for CMNS1234 at the Newcastle City Precinct. An Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA), she demonstrates expertise in teaching media and communication courses. Her research specializations include literary translation and creativity studies. She presented her honours research on applying the systems model of creativity to literary translation at the ANZCA 2023 conference.
Rokobauer contributed to inclusive education through co-authorship with Dr Elaine Xu of the chapter 'Bringing the(ir) world into the classroom: Adaptation, inclusivity, and learner agency' in the University of Newcastle's 'Education Without Boundaries' (2025), an open educational resource promoting inclusive pedagogies. She has also participated in university events such as LearnFest 2023.
