Erika Rendon-Ramos serves as Assistant Professor of Mexican American Studies within the Social Science faculty at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). She holds a double major in history and Spanish from Southwestern University (class of 2010), a master’s degree and Doctor of Philosophy in history from Rice University, and a master’s degree in higher education administration from UTRGV. Her academic interests center on borderlands history, Mexican American history, migration studies, immigration, borderlands dynamics, and Mexico. At UTRGV, one of the largest Hispanic-Serving Institutions in the country, Rendon-Ramos teaches courses related to these areas and actively supports the development of the next generation of Latino/a scholars, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and engineers. As a Latina scholar, she provides mentorship, encouraging students to pursue their passions and offering guidance to help them achieve their professional goals.
Rendon-Ramos has published several works contributing to the understanding of migration, identity, and cultural dynamics in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. Notable publications include “Voces de mujeres: Migration, Family, & Identity through the Voices of Mexican Women” (2022), “Haciendo Fila: Crossing Borders and Negotiating Entrance in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands” (Spring 2021), “Cosecha Voices: Migrant Farmworker Students, Pedagogy, Voice, and Self-Determination” (2021, co-authored with Stephanie Alvarez, Jose L. Martinez, Annabel Salamanca, Erika Salamanca, and Roberto C. Reyna), a book review of “Crossing Borders: My Journey in Music” by Max Baca and Craig Harris (University of New Mexico Press, 2021), and “Deconstructing the Master Narrative: Active Learning through Decolonial Pedagogy” (2023). Her scholarship emphasizes the voices and experiences of Mexican women migrants, border crossing narratives, and decolonial approaches to pedagogy in migrant farmworker student contexts. Since joining UTRGV in 2019, she has been involved in programs such as Puentes Grant in Mexican American Studies.
