Dr. F. Farouk is a Senior Lecturer in the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Monash University Malaysia, a position he has held since 2011. He joined Monash University in January 2007 after completing a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne, Australia (2007-2008). Prior to that, he served as a clinical specialist in cardiothoracic surgery at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur (2003-2006) and as a surgeon and lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia (2000-2002). His early career included trainee lecturer roles at USM (1996-2000), surgical medical officer positions, and internship at Hospital Kota Bharu (1993). F. Farouk holds an MD from Universiti Sains Malaysia (1992), Masters of Medicine in Surgery from USM (2000), Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery from Monash (2008), and Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from Monash (2015). He has extensive teaching experience, including anatomy and histology lecturing, clinical skills tutoring, MBBS program coordination, and supervision of Bachelor of Medical Sciences honors students since 2009. He is a member of the Malaysian Anatomy Teaching & Assessment Working Group and has organized events such as the 23rd Malaysian Association of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery Annual Scientific Meeting (2023).
F. Farouk's research specializes in cardiothoracic minimally invasive surgery and atrial fibrillation post coronary artery bypass grafting. Notable publications include 'Incidence and outcomes of postoperative atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass grafting of a randomized controlled trial: A blinded end-of-cycle analysis' (Reviews in Cardiovascular Medicine, 2022), 'Haruan Extract (Channa striatus) as an Effective Mediator in Promoting Wound Healing' (InTechOpen, 2022), 'Is Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) Surgery Still Preferable to Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) in View of Long-Term Outcomes among Diabetic Patients?' (InTechOpen, 2022), and 'The role of religion in mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic: the Malaysian multi-faith perspectives' (Health Promotion International, 2022). He has presented papers across Asia and Europe and won distinguished awards, including Gold Medal for Endoscopic Vein Harvesting (2005), Silver Medals at invention exhibitions (2005-2006, 2017), Young Investigator Award (2005), Best Lecturer of the Year (2006/07), and Best Paper Awards (2016). His contributions align with UN SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.
