Great Professor!
Ferdinand Miteff, MD, MBChB, FRACP, is Conjoint Associate Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, at the University of Newcastle. He is a Clinical and Interventional Neurologist in the Department of Neurology at John Hunter Hospital. Miteff trained as a clinical neurologist in Auckland and completed fellowships in stroke neurology in Newcastle and interventional neuroradiology in Sydney. He established the neurointerventional service at John Hunter Hospital in 2012, enhancing access to endovascular stroke treatments.
Miteff's academic interests encompass acute ischemic stroke management, including endovascular thrombectomy, thrombolytic therapies such as tenecteplase versus alteplase, and advanced imaging modalities like computed tomography perfusion and angiography for patient selection and outcome prediction. He has co-authored over 70 research works, accumulating more than 14,000 citations. Key publications include 'A randomized trial of tenecteplase versus alteplase for acute ischemic stroke' (New England Journal of Medicine, 2012; 869 citations), 'The independent predictive utility of computed tomography angiographic collateral status in acute ischaemic stroke' (Brain, 2009; 628 citations), 'Endovascular therapy for ischemic stroke with perfusion-imaging selection' (New England Journal of Medicine, 2015; 7059 citations), 'Thrombolysis guided by perfusion imaging up to 9 hours after onset of stroke' (New England Journal of Medicine, 2019; 1220 citations), 'Tenecteplase versus alteplase before thrombectomy for ischemic stroke' (New England Journal of Medicine, 2018; 1021 citations), and 'Extending thrombolysis to 4·5–9 h and wake-up stroke using perfusion imaging: a systematic review and meta-analysis of individual patient data' (The Lancet, 2019; 614 citations). Recent contributions feature 'Cost-Effectiveness of Endovascular Thrombectomy in Large Vessel Occlusion Stroke' (Neurology, 2025) and studies on pediatric stroke thrombectomy. In 2024, Miteff was part of the Telestroke Team honored at the Hunter Medical Research Institute Research Excellence Awards. He contributes to statewide telestroke networks and delivers lectures, such as at Smart Strokes 2025.
