Professor Govindasamy Bala is a Professor at the Center for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, India. He earned an M.Sc. from the University of Poona in 1988 and a Ph.D. from McGill University in 1994. His research focuses on global climate change, Earth system modeling, the carbon cycle, the hydrological cycle, radiative forcing and feedbacks, land use and land cover change, solar geoengineering, and global and regional monsoons. He uses comprehensive Earth system models to examine robust responses of the global climate, carbon, and water cycles, with contributions to understanding fast and slow feedbacks, solar geoengineering, and biophysical impacts of land cover change. These contributions have implications for mitigation strategies such as afforestation and climate intervention approaches.
Professor Bala has served as a Lead Author and Contributing Author for IPCC Working Group I reports, including chapters in AR5 (2013) and AR6 (2021). He is a member of the Earth Commission and has held editorial roles with Earth System Dynamics and Environmental Research Letters. His honors include the Norbert Gerbier-MUMM International Award from the World Meteorological Organization in 2014, the Scopus Young Scientist Award in Earth Sciences in 2008, and membership in various scientific steering committees and advisory boards. He has authored or co-authored approximately 130 peer-reviewed journal publications and around 30 book chapters, reports, and commentaries, and has delivered hundreds of invited talks.
