She earned her Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of the Free State in 2001. Her thesis focused on the isolation and characterization of a possible polygalacturonase inhibiting protein from wheat.
Her professional experience includes serving as a post-doctoral associate at the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center at the University of Georgia in the United States from 2002 to 2004, followed by a post-doctoral position in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of the Free State from 2005 to 2006. She then worked as a Senior Professional Officer in the Department of Chemistry at the University of the Free State before assuming her current role as Senior Researcher in the Facility for Genomics and Proteomics, Microbial, Biochemical and Food Biotechnology since 2009. Her research areas of interest include proteomics and small molecule residue analysis by LC/MS/MS. She has contributed to publications on topics such as polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins, histone acetylation in yeast, and biochemical interactions in plant pathology and microbiology, with papers appearing in journals including Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, Phytochemistry, and BMC Biochemistry.
