About Gang

Gang Tian is a Distinguished Professor at Peking University, where he has held a professorship since 1991. He earned a B.S. in Mathematics from Nanjing University in 1982, an M.S. in Mathematics from Peking University in 1984, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Harvard University in 1988. His research areas include differential and symplectic geometry, geometric analysis, and differential equations. Tian has held numerous academic appointments, including positions at Princeton University (Assistant Professor 1988-1990, Professor 2003-2009, Higgins Professor 2009-2017, and Higgins Professor Emeritus since 2017), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Simons Professor 1996-2006), and other institutions such as SUNY Stony Brook and the Courant Institute at NYU. He has served as Director of the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research since 2005 and as Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences at Peking University from 2013 to 2017. Tian is Vice President of Peking University (2017-2019) and has held leadership roles including President of the Chinese Mathematical Society since 2019. He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (elected 2001) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (elected 2004). Among his honors are the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (1991-1993), the NSF Alan Waterman Award (1994), and the Oswald Veblen Prize (1996). Tian has contributed extensively to editorial boards of journals such as Acta Mathematica Sinica, Geometry and Topology, Advances in Mathematics, and Annals of Mathematics. He has delivered numerous distinguished lectures worldwide and participated in various scientific committees and advisory boards.
