About Gary

Professor Gary T. Moore is a distinguished Emeritus Professor of Environment-Behaviour Studies within the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney. His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Architecture with Honours from the University of California, followed by advanced studies at Clark University, where he earned a Master of Arts in Developmental Psychology and a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Psychology. These qualifications, combined with his professional credentials as a member of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA), the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA), and Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society (FAPA), position him uniquely at the intersection of architecture, urban planning, and environmental psychology.

Professor Moore's career at the University of Sydney is marked by significant leadership, including an eight-year tenure as Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning. He also served as Former Editor-in-Chief of the Architectural Science Review, contributing to the dissemination of research in architectural science. His scholarly work centers on environment-behaviour studies, exploring how designed environments influence human behaviour, with a special focus on spaces for children and young people. Key publications include his chapter "Toward Environment-Behavior Theories of the Middle Range" published in 1987, which advances theoretical frameworks in the field, and "Utilization Issues in Environment-Behavior Research." He contributed to the multi-volume series Advances in Environment, Behavior, and Design and developed the Children's Physical Environment Rating Scale (CPERS), a validated tool for evaluating the quality of physical environments in early childhood education settings.

Through his research and publications, Professor Moore has had a lasting impact on architectural design practices, advocating for psychologically informed environments that enhance developmental outcomes. His contributions continue to inform policy and design in child care and educational facilities.
