Dr. Gavin McCormack is a Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. He completed a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health at the University of Western Australia in 2008, a Master of Science in Sports Science at Edith Cowan University in 2003, and a Bachelor of Science in Human Movement at the University of Western Australia in 2001. He also completed postdoctoral training in Population and Public Health in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary.
Dr. McCormack leads the Built Environment and Healthy Living Lab, which examines the relationships between urban design and health outcomes including physical activity, active living, diet, sedentary behaviour, weight status, injury, and cardiovascular health among adults, children, and equity-seeking populations. He is a full member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute, the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute, and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health. Since 2014, he has served as Associate Scientific Editor for Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention in Canada and on the editorial board of the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity. He is Co-Director of Research for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council–funded CO-PLAY Network, a national initiative supporting community-engaged research on physical literacy, physical activity, and the well-being of newcomer children and youth. In 2014, he was named one of Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in epidemiology, health research methods, and statistics.
