Professor Gavin Prideaux is Professor and Deputy Dean (Research) in the College of Science and Engineering at Flinders University. He also serves as Director of Flinders Palaeontology and Research Section Lead for Ecology, Evolution and Environment. Prideaux holds a BSc (Hons) from Flinders University awarded in 1992 and a PhD from the same institution awarded in 1999. His doctoral research focused on kangaroo evolution. Following his PhD, he completed postdoctoral positions at the University of California, Naracoorte Caves and the Western Australian Museum before returning to Flinders University in 2007.
Prideaux’s research examines links between patterns in Australian mammal evolution, ecology and extinction, and climate- and human-driven environmental changes. He has developed an extensive field program in Cenozoic vertebrate palaeontology, with excavations at numerous sites across Australia, particularly in caves. His work emphasises the kangaroo family as a model for investigating long-term adaptive responses to climatic changes. In addition to his research leadership, Prideaux contributes to teaching in areas including human evolution, vertebrate anatomy and evolution, vertebrate palaeontology, and the evolution of biological diversity. He is a member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts.
