About Gene

Gene V. Glass is Regents Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University in the Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation. He received a B.A. cum laude in German and Mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1962, an M.S. in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin in 1963, and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with a minor in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Wisconsin in 1965. Glass began his academic career as Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1965 to 1967. He then joined the University of Colorado at Boulder, serving as Associate Professor from 1967 to 1970 and Professor from 1970 to 1986. In 1986, he moved to Arizona State University, where he held positions in the Division of Advanced Studies in Education Policy, Leadership & Curriculum and the Division of Advanced Studies in Learning, Technology & Psychology in Education. He served as Associate Dean for Research in the College of Education from 1997 to 2001 and was appointed Regents Professor in 2004.

Trained in statistics and educational psychology, Glass developed meta-analysis, a method for integrating research findings, applying it to psychotherapy outcomes, class size and achievement, and educational policy. Notable publications include the books Statistical Methods in Education and Psychology (1970, with later editions), The Benefits of Psychotherapy (1980), Meta-analysis in Social Research (1981), and Fertilizers, Pills & Magnetic Strips: The Fate of Public Education in America (2008); key papers such as "Primary, secondary and meta-analysis of research" (1976) and "Meta-analysis of psychotherapy outcome studies" (1977, with M.L. Smith). He has published nearly 200 articles and over a dozen books. Glass served as President of the American Educational Research Association in 1975, received the AERA Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education Award in 2005, was elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association and American Educational Research Association, and became a Member of the National Academy of Education in 2000. He founded Education Policy Analysis Archives, International Journal of Education and the Arts, and Education Review.
