Professor Geoffrey Cloud holds the position of Adjunct Professor of Stroke Medicine in the Department of Neuroscience, School of Translational Medicine at Monash University, and serves as Director of Stroke Services at Alfred Health. He qualified with MBBS and BSc from The Medical College of St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, where he trained in medicine from 1986 to 1992, and holds fellowships including FRCP, FRACP, and FESO. Prior to his current roles, he worked as a full-time Consultant Stroke Physician and Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at St George’s Hospital in London. As leader of the Cloud group at Monash University, his career emphasizes advancing stroke care through clinical research and service improvement.
Professor Cloud's research specializations include stroke medicine, cerebrovascular disorders, posterior circulation stroke, novel interventions for motor recovery after stroke, and the needs of stroke carers. He has participated as an investigator in more than 50 randomized controlled stroke trials and maintains close collaborations with researchers such as Professors Natasha Lannin and Robert Medcalf. He is co-author of the Oxford University Press Handbook of Stroke Medicine and has authored numerous publications, including 'Baseline Characteristics of Participants in STAREE: A Randomized Trial for Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease Events and Prolongation of Disability-Free Survival in Older People' (2024, Journal of the American Heart Association), 'Development, implementation, and evaluation of the Australian Stroke Data Tool (AuSDaT)' (2024, Health Information Management Journal), 'Hyper-Acute Stroke Systems of Care and Workflow' (2024, Current Neurology and Neuroscience Reports), and 'Incidence of and risk factors for new-onset urinary and fecal incontinence after acute stroke' (2024, Continence). In leadership roles, he chairs the Australian Stroke Data Tool (AuSDaT) monitoring committee and the Australian Stroke Registry (AuSCR) quality improvement committee, serves as an elected council member of the Stroke Society of Australasia and New Zealand, adjudicates outcomes for the ASPREE study, and chairs the stroke adjudication committee for the STAREE trial. His contributions support national stroke service quality improvement via participation in the AuSCR and development of acute stroke treatments, secondary prevention strategies, and recovery interventions through ongoing clinical trials such as MIDAS 2, TEXAIS, and STOP-MSU.
