George Poste is the Del E. Webb Professor of Health Innovation and Chief Scientist at the Complex Adaptive Systems Initiative (CASI) at Arizona State University, holding the rank of Regents Professor in the School of Life Sciences and serving as Health Solutions Ambassador for the College of Health Solutions. In Health Science, his contributions center on precision medicine and health technologies. He earned a D.V.M. in 1966 from the University of Bristol, graduating first in class, along with M.R.C.V.S. that year; a Ph.D. in Virology in 1969 from Bristol; M.R.C. Path. in 1979; D.Sc. in 1987; and honorary LL.D. degrees from Bristol (1995) and Dundee (1998).
Poste's career began with research fellowships at the Universities of Bristol and London, advancing to Principal Cancer Research Scientist at Roswell Park Memorial Institute and Professor at SUNY Buffalo (1975-1980). He held escalating executive roles at SmithKline & French and SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals (1980-2000), including Vice President, President, and Chief Science and Technology Officer of R&D, overseeing approvals of drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics. At ASU since 2003, he directed the Biodesign Institute (2003-2009), has led CASI since 2009, and heads the Institute for Future Health (since 2021), a joint ASU-University of Arizona initiative in precision and digital health. His research integrates genomics, synthetic biology, and high-performance computing to study molecular networks in diseases, developing precision diagnostics and remote monitoring with sensors and mobile devices. He has published over 400 papers and edited 14 books on pharmaceutical technologies, cancer, and infectious diseases; recent works include AI-enabled liquid biopsy platforms (Scientific Reports, 2025), biosafety special issues (Applied Biosafety, 2025), and spaceflight microbiology (Microbiology and Molecular Biology Reviews, 2024). Awards include the 2025 Award for Leadership in Personalized Medicine, R&D Scientist of the Year (2004), Scrip Lifetime Achievement (2009), Arizona Bioindustry Pioneer (2016), CBE (1999), FRS (1997), and FMedSci (1998). He serves on boards of Exelixis and Caris Life Sciences and advises on biodefense and national security.
