About Ghena

Associate Professor Ghena Krayem is a legal scholar at the University of Sydney Law School, where she has served since 2000, rising to the rank of Associate Professor. She earned her BA, LLB, and PhD from the University of Sydney, along with a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the College of Law. Her PhD, completed in 2011, conducted the first empirical research on how Muslims in Australia navigate family disputes, blending Islamic traditions with the secular legal system. Krayem teaches courses in constitutional law, public law, and family law, contributing to legal education for over two decades.

Krayem's research centers on multiculturalism, legal pluralism, Islamic law, dispute resolution processes within Muslim communities, family law, and domestic and family violence. Key publications include the co-authored book Understanding Sharia Processes: Women's Experiences of Family Disputes (Hart Publishing, 2022) with Farrah Ahmed, based on empirical data examining women's interactions with Sharia in family matters. She co-authored Accommodating Muslims under Common Law: A Comparative Analysis (Routledge, 2016) with Salim Farrar, analyzing the integration of Muslim practices into common law frameworks. Krayem edited Muslim Women and Agency: An Australian Context (Brill, 2021), compiling contributions on Muslim women's autonomy and challenges in Australia. Other notable works feature articles such as 'Listening to Muslim Women's Lived Expertise Concerning Surviving Family Violence' (Oxford Journal of Law and Religion, 2023) and studies on Muslim women's agency in domestic violence services. In 2022, she led a funded project on public policy research addressing domestic, family, and sexual violence, collaborating with experts from Western Sydney University. Her scholarship informs policy and academic discourse on accommodating religious minorities within Australian law, particularly supporting Muslim women in legal and family contexts.
