Chu's research interests include the prevention and management of chronic kidney disease, symptom management particularly for dialysis patients, sleep disorders and sleep apnoea, application of digital technologies in chronic disease management, and nursing scholarship. Her PhD research identified the best dialysis model for patients with sleep apnoea, with findings published and presented nationally and internationally, cited in the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines, and recognized through invitations to the Medical Research Futures Fund roundtable on sleep apnoea research priorities. She is a member of the Australasian Kidney Trials Network (AKTN) haemodialysis working group and an invited nurse expert on the global steering committee for the MRFF-funded INCH-HD trial. As an affiliate researcher with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and the Priority Research Centre for Asthma and Breathing, Chu has attracted over $3 million in research grants. In teaching, she is the program convenor for the Master of Nursing, supervises PhD students, served as Head of Professional Experience (2021-2023) where she created an innovative clinical placement handbook commended by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council, and maintains high student satisfaction scores. Key publications encompass 'Living with chronic kidney disease' (2024), 'Sleep Apnea in Maintenance Hemodialysis: A Mixed-Methods Study' (2020), 'Exploring the factors affecting home dialysis patients' participation in telehealth-assisted home visits' (2023), and a systematic review on sleep hygiene strategies in chronic kidney disease.
