About Giovanni

Giovanni Peri is the C. Bryan Cameron Distinguished Professor in International Economics and Professor of Economics at the University of California, Davis. He earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1998, a Doctoral Degree in Economics from Bocconi University, Milano in 1997, and a Laurea in Economics and Social Sciences from Bocconi University in 1992. Peri's research focuses on the economics of international migration, including its impacts on labor markets, productivity, innovation, entrepreneurship, and industrial resilience in host countries. He studies determinants of migration, policies for refugee integration, effects of high-skilled and low-skilled immigration, mass deportations, and economic consequences of U.S. immigration policy changes. His publications appear in leading journals such as the American Economic Review, Review of Economic Studies, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Labor Economics, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Urban Economics, and AEA Papers and Proceedings.

Peri joined the University of California, Davis as Assistant Professor in 2001, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and Full Professor in 2011, served as Chair of the Department of Economics from 2015 to 2019, and founded and directs the Global Migration Center since 2019. Prior roles include Assistant Professor at Bocconi University from 1998 to 2000 and Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute from 2000 to 2001. He is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, Research Professor at CESifo, Research Fellow at IZA and CReAM, and holds other affiliations. Peri co-edited the Journal of the European Economic Association from 2019 to 2023 and serves on editorial boards including Journal of Population Economics and Regional Science and Urban Economics. Notable awards include the Harry Johnson Prize for the best paper in the Canadian Journal of Economics in 2020 (2021), UC Davis Graduate Program Advising and Mentoring Award (2020), Excellence in Refereeing Award from the American Economic Review (2017), and Economic Journal Referee Prize (2017). Key books are The Economics of International Migrations (2016), Unexplored Aspects of Labor Market Discrimination (2015, co-edited), and The Socio-Economic Impact of Migration Flows (2014, co-edited). Select papers include “Immigration’s Effect on US Wages and Employment Redux” (NBER WP 32389, 2024), “The labor market effects of Mexican repatriations” (Journal of Public Economics, 2022), “The Political Impact of Immigration” (AEJ: Applied Economics, 2022), “The Effect of Immigration on Productivity: Evidence from US States” (Review of Economics and Statistics, 2012), and “Task Specialization, Immigration, and Wages” (AEJ: Applied Economics, 2009). He has received grants from the National Science Foundation, Russell Sage Foundation, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, World Bank, and Volkswagen Foundation. His research features in CNN, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, National Public Radio, and The Economist.
