About Gita

Professor Gita Mishra AO is Professor of Life Course Epidemiology in the School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Queensland. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Auckland. Internationally recognised for advancing research on women’s reproductive health and chronic conditions across the life course, she serves as the founding Director of the Australian Women and Girls’ Health Research (AWaGHR) Centre at UQ, leading a multidisciplinary team of over 40, including 12 PhD students. As Director of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health (ALSWH)—a national flagship initiative since 1996 tracking data from over 57,000 women in four age cohorts—she spearheads NHMRC and MRFF-funded projects on endometriosis, menstrual disorders, perimenopause, and menopause, emphasising life course perspectives and inclusion of First Nations and culturally diverse women. She also leads InterLACE, an international collaboration harmonising data from more than 1.2 million women in 35 studies across 19 countries.

Professor Mishra holds an NHMRC Leadership Fellowship (Level 3, 2022–2031), following earlier ARC Future Fellowship (2013–2017) and NHMRC Principal Research Fellowship (2017–2021). She has authored over 500 scientific publications, including lead editorship of "A Life Course Approach to Women’s Health" (Oxford University Press), alongside numerous book chapters and government reports. Her influence extends to policy, having led the evidence review for the National Women’s Health Strategy 2020–2030 and served as scientific advisor for Queensland’s Women and Girls’ Health Strategy 2023–2032. She is a founding member of the National Women’s Health Advisory Council, sits on the Strategic Advisory Committee for Queensland’s Women and Girls’ Health Promotion Program, co-presided the 16th World Endometriosis Congress (2023–2025), chairs the Queensland Heart Foundation branch, and is President-elect of the World Endometriosis Society (2025–2027). Notable honours include Officer of the Order of Australia (AO, 2025), Honorary Doctorate from Stockholm University (2025), Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (FAHMS, 2017), and the RANZCOG Award for Excellence in Women’s Health (2022).
