About Glauco

Glauco Arbix is a Full Professor in the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH-USP). He holds a PhD in Sociology from USP and has completed postdoctoral studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, 1999 and 2010), Columbia University (2007 and 2009), the University of California, Berkeley (2008), and the London School of Economics (2002). His research areas include Economic Sociology and Industrial Sociology, with themes focused on technology, innovation theory, internationalization, and industrialization. Arbix has served as coordinator of the Observatory for Innovation at the Institute of Advanced Studies (IEA-USP) and previously coordinated the Observatory of Innovation and Competitiveness at the same institute from 2007 to 2011.

Throughout his career, Arbix has held significant leadership roles, including President of the Brazilian Agency for Innovation (FINEP) from 2011 to 2015 and President of the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA) from 2003 to 2006. He also served as General Coordinator of the Center for Strategic Affairs of the Presidency of the Republic (NAE) from 2003 to 2006 and was a member of the National Council for Science and Technology (CCT) from 2007 to 2011. Additional appointments include Tinker Visiting Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2010), Fulbright New Century Scholar (2009-2010), and adviser to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP, 2006-2009). He previously taught at the Department of Political Science at UNICAMP (1996-1997) and at the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV-SP, 1995). Arbix is recognized for his contributions to innovation policy and economic development in Brazil through these academic and public service roles.
