Associate Professor Glen McGillivray served in the Theatre and Performance Studies discipline within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. He obtained his PhD in Performance Studies from the same university, submitting his thesis "Theatricality: A Critical Genealogy." McGillivray's professional career began as a theatre director and acting teacher, spanning nearly two decades with organizations including the State Theatre Company of South Australia, Australian Theatre for Young People, Actors Centre Australia, Actors College of Theatre and Television, and NIDA's Open Program. He was Artistic Director of Theatre of Desire and convened the graduate Practice-Based Research program at NIDA from 2014 to 2017. Previously, he held a position in the School of Contemporary Art at Western Sydney University. At Sydney, he advanced from Senior Lecturer (2008-2019) to Associate Professor, fulfilling roles such as Undergraduate Coordinator, Honours Coordinator, and Research Coordinator.
His research interests encompassed the history of acting, drama and theatre studies, eighteenth-century history, performance studies, and postdramatic theatre. McGillivray contributed as Chief Investigator to the ARC-funded AusStage project (2007-2012) and as Associate Investigator to the ARC Centre for the History of Emotions (2014-2015), and was a research fellow at the Folger Shakespeare Library in 2015. Notable publications include his book Actors, Audiences, and Emotions in the Eighteenth Century (Springer, 2023), the edited collection Scrapbooks, Snapshots and Memorabilia: Hidden Archives of Performance (Lang, 2011), and peer-reviewed articles like "Rant, Cant and Tone: The Voice of the Eighteenth-Century Actor and Sarah Siddons" (Theatre Notebook, 2017), "Suiting Forms to Their Conceit": Emotion and Convention in Eighteenth-Century Tragic Acting (Theatre Survey, 2018), and "The Discursive Formation of Theatricality as a Critical Concept" (Metaphorik.de, 2009). He served on the editorial boards of Australasian Drama Studies and About Performance, and supervised postgraduate research using arts-based methods while teaching courses on acting techniques, Shakespeare rehearsal, and directing.
