Dr. Govand Azeez is a Lecturer in Politics and International Relations in the School of International Studies at Macquarie University’s Faculty of Arts. He specializes in the history of technology and the political economy of Artificial Intelligence, examining the macro-historical evolution of technological systems and AI’s impacts on society, work, politics, education, and social relations. Azeez earned his Doctor of Philosophy and was nominated for a Junior Fellowship at Harvard University’s Society of Fellows by his doctoral examiner, Professor E.R.J. Owen. He has received the Australian Postgraduate Award (2015), Dean’s Award for Contribution to Raising Profile of Arts Internationally (2014), Faculty of Arts Emerging Scholars Scheme (2019), Post-Graduate Research Fund (2013), and Student-Led Award for Excellence in Teaching (2017).
Azeez’s career includes Visiting Fellowships at Harvard University’s Department of History and Columbia University’s Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies. Since 2018, he has advised industry, higher education, and emerging economies on AI for workforce development, education, and innovation. In 2025, he became a member and expert advisor for the Australian National AI Centre’s Technology & Digital Division, the Global Council for Responsible AI, and AIEOU at Oxford University. His commentary features in The Wall Street Journal, The Diplomat, ABC, SBS News, Campus Review, and Future Campus. He convenes units such as POIR8040 Technology, Power and Uneven Development, INTS1301 Technology and Society: From Plato to NATO, and POIR8420 Understanding World Politics.
His major publications include the forthcoming book Science, Technology and Society in the Middle East and North Africa: From Stone Tools and Algebra to Artificial Intelligence (Bristol University Press, 2027), chapters The Human Journey with AI: A Global Assessment (Routledge, 2026) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and South Asian Economies (Routledge, 2025), and articles Indigenous Data Sovereignty in Australian Higher Education (Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management, 2025) and Human-Centred Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI in Education at Oxford University, 2025). Azeez delivers invited lectures on AI’s political economy and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and supervises PhD and MRes theses on capitalist crises, imperialism, and ecology. His work contributes to discussions on technology sovereignty, Indigenous data sovereignty, and global AI governance.
