About Graham

Graham A. Colditz, MD, DrPH, is the Niess-Gain Professor of Surgery and Director of the Division of Public Health Sciences in the Department of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Renowned in Health Science for his expertise in epidemiology and cancer prevention, he holds additional roles as Associate Director of Prevention and Control at the Siteman Cancer Center, Principal Investigator of the Program for the Elimination of Cancer Disparities and the Washington University Implementation Science Center for Cancer Control (WU-ISC3), Co-director of the Cell to Society Pathway doctoral training program, and Director of the Master of Population Health Science program. With over 30 years of experience studying lifestyle factors related to the etiology and prevention of chronic disease, particularly among women, Dr. Colditz focuses on modifiable risk factors, breast cancer pathways amenable to intervention, cancer disparities, implementation science for guideline uptake in health systems, and development of web and tablet-based tools for tailored prevention messages.

Dr. Colditz received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Queensland in 1979, Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from Harvard University in 1982, Doctor of Public Health in Epidemiology from Harvard University in 1986, and Medical Degree from the University of Queensland in 1998. He spent 25 years at Harvard University, serving as principal investigator on the Nurses’ Health Study (1996-2006), founding principal investigator on the Growing Up Today Study, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Professor of Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health (promoted 1998), Associate Director of the Channing Laboratory (2005-2006), Director of the Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention, and leader of the Cancer Epidemiology Program at the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center. His contributions include editing numerous books on cancer prevention and health promotion, serving as editor-in-chief of Cancer Causes and Control (1998-2006), and leading the Cancer News in Context blog. Major awards encompass the American Cancer Society Medal of Honor (2011), American Association for Cancer Research Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cancer Prevention Research (2014), American Society of Clinical Oncology-American Cancer Society Award and Lecture (2014), American Cancer Society-Cissy Hornung Clinical Research Professorship (2004), and election to the Institute of Medicine (2006). Dr. Colditz has chaired National Academies committees, served on the National Cancer Institute Board of Scientific Advisors (2012-2017), and contributed to Surgeon General reports on tobacco, with his research cited over 241,000 times.
