Professor Greg Foliente is Enterprise Professor of Sustainable and Resilient Built Environment in the Department of Infrastructure Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Melbourne. He also holds the position of Deputy Director of the Centre for Disaster Management and Public Safety in the Melbourne School of Engineering. With a PhD and two MSc degrees from Virginia Tech in the USA (1993) and a BSc in Civil Engineering from Mapua University in the Philippines (1984), Foliente joined the University of Melbourne in March 2017 following over two decades as a Senior Researcher at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Land and Water Flagship from 1995 to 2016. Earlier in his career, he worked at Virginia Tech and the University of California, Berkeley.
Foliente's research focuses on systems-based approaches to climate mitigation, adaptation, and sustainability of the built environment, urban sustainability transitions, disaster-resilience modelling for extreme weather-related disasters and climate change, and energy efficiency in housing. He has authored four books and hundreds of peer-reviewed publications, including "Net-zero buildings: Incorporating embodied impacts" (2014), "Energy master planning for net-zero emission communities: State of the art and research challenges" (2020), "Whole-life Baseline Carbon Assessment of Residential Building Stock - A Victorian Case Study" (2023), and "Urban regeneration and placemaking: a Digital Twin enhanced performance-based framework for Melbourne’s Greenline Project" (2024). His contributions have earned him the prestigious ASCE James Croes Medal (2003), among numerous other honors, and recognition in Stanford University’s top 2% scientists worldwide. Foliente has collaborated with senior leaders across government levels, delivering high-impact programs, and serves on editorial boards of journals such as Building and Environment, Buildings (MDPI), and Infrastructure Asset Management. He is President and Board Chair of the International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment (iiSBE), Guest Professor in an EU-based International PhD Programme in Sustainable Built Environment, and expert consultant to UN agencies and international organizations.
