About Gregory

Professor Gregory Fox is a Professor of Respiratory Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. A respiratory physician, epidemiologist, and clinical trialist, he earned a PhD focused on early detection of tuberculosis in Vietnam, along with MBBS, FRACP, BSc(Med), and MIPH degrees. His career history encompasses clinical academic roles in the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital since 2015 and Research Leader at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research since 2009. Currently, he serves as Executive Chief Investigator of the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in Tuberculosis, Director of the Sydney Vietnam Academic Network—a multidisciplinary group fostering research and education in Vietnam—and leads a research group in the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre dedicated to tuberculosis. Additionally, as Director of the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre, he supports pan-university multidisciplinary research across Southeast Asia.

Fox's primary research interests lie in the detection, treatment, and prevention of tuberculosis, particularly drug-resistant forms, in resource-limited settings. He leads prominent clinical trials, including the FLIRT Trial on treatment regimens for isoniazid-resistant tuberculosis and the VQUIN trial evaluating levofloxacin for preventing multidrug-resistant tuberculosis among household contacts. With over 99 publications cited more than 8,800 times on Google Scholar, key works encompass systematic reviews and meta-analyses on tuberculosis contact investigation, studies on host-protein biomarkers distinguishing asymptomatic tuberculosis, and evaluations of long-term outcomes for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis patients. His efforts have attracted substantial funding, such as NHMRC Investigator Grants, a $3 million award for a new tuberculosis research centre, and multimillion-dollar DFAT grants. Major honors include the 2021 NHMRC David Cooper Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies Award as the highest-ranked recipient, the 2015 Young Innovator in TB Research Award from the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, and the 2022 Ho Chi Minh Scientific Prize for advancements in respiratory health. Fox teaches courses on drug-resistant tuberculosis, clinical trial design and implementation, meta-analysis, and clinical epidemiology, shaping future experts in respiratory medicine and public health.
