H. Joseph Bohn, Jr., PhD, MBA, is an associate professor in the Department of Health Sciences at the University of South Florida College of Public Health. He serves as Director of Community Engagement for the Activist Lab and Senior Research Scientist at the Harrell Center for the Study of Family Violence. Bohn earned his PhD in Public Health Sciences with a specialization in Health Management from the University of Louisville in 2016. His dissertation, titled "Leveling the Playing Field in Neighborhood Revitalizations: The Influence of Social Determinants of Health and Institutional Logics," analyzed neighborhood revitalization through community partnerships, drawing on 39 semi-structured interviews to explore institutional theory, logics, leadership, partnerships, trust, policy integration, healthcare access, and faith-based organization engagement. He holds an MBA with a focus on Healthcare and Economics from the University of Louisville (2006) and a BS in Business Administration (Accounting) from the same institution (1992).
Prior to his academic career, Bohn served as an analyst at BayCare Health System, where he supported governance for electronic health record implementations and developed measures of success programs. He owned KMI Communications LLC, providing technical writing services, and held roles in business development, government property management at Raytheon, and program analysis for the US Navy. Joining USF College of Public Health in 2016 as Visiting Assistant Professor, he has progressed to associate professor, teaching courses including Introduction to U.S. Public Health, Holistic Systems Thinking, and Directed Research in Systems Thinking. His research focuses on healthcare reform and policy, public health systems, community engagement, qualitative research, sociology and behavioral health, and systems perspectives. Key publications include "Strengthening Faculty Mentoring of Online DrPH Students: A Service-First Focus Approach" (2026, Public Health Reports, with Donna J. Petersen) and "How Hybrid Institutional Logics Matter: The Importance of Trust and Embeddedness in Neighborhood Revitalization Collaborations" (2020, Journal of Applied Social Science, with David J. Roelfs). Bohn received the USF College of Public Health Excellence in Teaching Award in 2021 and 2025. He contributes to community advisory boards, including Healthy Hillsborough Behavioral Health Community Workgroup, and supports CEPH accreditation efforts.
