Dr. Haakan Strand serves as a Senior Lecturer and Program Convenor in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work at the University of Queensland. He possesses advanced qualifications including a Master of Social Science (MSocSci), Master of Nurse Practitioner Studies (MNPractSt), and PhD, complemented by professional designations as a Registered Nurse (RN), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Bachelor of Science (BSc), and Bachelor of Nursing (BN). Throughout his tenure at the University of Queensland, spanning from 2007 to 2019 as Senior Lecturer, Strand has held key roles such as Program Director and Lead for the Master of Nurse Practitioner Studies program. His contributions to nursing education emphasize innovative approaches, including a pilot project utilizing personal video capture technology for assessing clinical skills in distance education for nurse practitioner students, as detailed in his 2013 publication in Nurse Education Today.
Strand's research specializations encompass advanced practice nursing, the role and legitimacy of non-medical surgical assistants (NMSA) in perioperative settings, multidisciplinary models of care for pre-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, exercise training efficacy and safety in CKD, osteoporosis health professional interventions for fracture screening and treatment, regional anesthesia applications in burn-injured patients, and nurse-performed endoscopy for colorectal cancer screening. Prominent publications include "Exercise training in CKD: efficacy, adherence, and safety" (2015, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, 181 citations); "Effects of multidisciplinary models of care for adult pre-dialysis patients with chronic kidney disease: a systematic review" (2012, JBI Evidence Implementation, 97 citations); "Valuing the role of the non-medical surgical assistant in Australia" (2017, ANZ Journal of Surgery); "A selected international appraisal of the role of the Non-Medical Surgical Assistant" (2017, ACORN Journal); "Practice audit of the role of the Non-medical surgical assistant in Australia, an online survey" (2016, International Journal of Nursing Practice); "Exploring the role of regional anesthesia in the treatment of the burn-injured patient: a narrative review of current literature" (2019, The Clinical Journal of Pain); and "Effectiveness of the Non-Medical Surgical Assistant measured by patient outcome assessment" (2021, International Journal of Nursing Practice). He has supervised postgraduate theses on regional anaesthesia in burns and other clinical topics. Strand's scholarship, evidenced by over 400 citations, advances evidence-based practices enhancing patient outcomes, healthcare equity, and professional role expansion in nursing.
